HAWTHORNE EFFECT - The Hawthorne effect refers to the increase in the performance of individuals who are noticed, watched, and paid attention to by researchers or supervisors.

HEALTH AND CARE PROFESSIONS COUNCIL - Protect the public by mandatory regulating 15 health and care professions in the UK. To do this we:

HETEROFLEXIBLE - Defined as someone who is predominantly heterosexual but is sometimes sexually attracted to (or curious about exploring) members of the same sex.

HETEROSEXUAL (or straight) - A person who has an emotional, romantic and/or sexual orientation towards people of the opposite gender.

HINDSIGHT - the ability to understand an event or situation only after it has happened.

HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER (HPD) - Histrionic Personality Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by excessive attention-seeking behaviours, emotional instability, and a distorted self-image. People with HPD often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention.

HOMOSEXUAL - Largely considered a more medical term used to describe someone who has an emotional romantic and/or sexual orientation towards someone of the same gender. ‘Gay’ is now more generally used.

HOMOPHOBIA - The fear or dislike of someone who identifies as (or is perceived to be) lesbian, gay or bi, based on prejudice or negative attitudes, beliefs or views about lesbian, gay or bi people.

HOSPITAL MANAGERS - Hospital Managers are the non-executive directors of the hospital where you are detained. They can also make decision about when to discharge people from the hospital.

HYPERAROUSAL - Is a state of increased physiological and psychological activation observed in conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Hyperarousal refers to activating the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to increased heart rate, rapid breathing, sweating, and muscle tension. Hyperarousal is often triggered by stress, anxiety, or trauma and can negatively affect an individual’s quality of life.

HYPNOTHERAPY - Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses guided hypnosis to help clients reach a trance-like state characterized by focused concentration and heightened suggestibility. It is often employed to treat various health concerns, including anxiety, pain management, and behavioural issues. During hypnotherapy, individuals may experience a state of deep relaxation and increased awareness, allowing them to explore thoughts and feelings that may be affecting their well-being.

HYPOAROUSAL - Is can be a response to trauma and/or stress. It is characterised by a state of emotional numbing, disconnection, and reduced physiological activation in response to perceived threat or danger. This state of under-arousal can make it difficult for individuals to experience pleasure, feel motivated, or connect with others.
