JARGON BUSTER “R”
RACE - The idea that the human species is divided into distinct groups on the basis of inherited physical and behavioural differences. Genetic studies in the late 20th century refuted the existence of biogenetically distinct races, and scholars now argue that “races” are cultural interventions reflecting specific attitudes and beliefs that were imposed on different populations in the wake of western European conquests beginning in the 15th century.
RACIAL RELATIONS ACT 1976 - This act strengthened the previous legislation by making it illegal to discriminate on racial grounds in the provision of goods, facilities, and services, including education. It also established the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) to replace the Race Relations Board. This was then included and strengthened in the Equality Act 2010
REFUGEE - A person who is displaced from their birth country through war, natural disaster, reasons of religious, gender, political, or physical discrimination etc.
RESPITE CARE - Short-term care provided to give us as carers a break from caring, either in the home or in a care facility. Some respite care can be funded by our local council.
RESPONSIBLE CLINICIAN - The Responsible Clinician is someone in charge of your overall care and treatment while you are in hospital.
RESTRAINT - Restraint means being physically held by members of staff.
ROBBERS CAVE EXPERIMENT (by Muzafer and Carolyn Sherif) - Sherif wanted to show how easily groups could turn on each other when they were fighting for limited resources. But he also wanted to show how easily those groups could set aside their differences and come together to defeat a common enemy. e took his experiments to a summer camp. The 22 boys at Robber’s Cave State Park did not know that their summer camp experience would be part of a larger social experiment.
RORSCHACH INKBLOT TEST - The Rorschach Inkblot Test is a projective psychological assessment with 10 inkblots on cards, designed to probe the unconscious mind. By analysing responses to the inkblots, psychologists hoped to gain insights into an individual’s social behaviour, thoughts, and emotions emerge, often unveiling deeper, unconscious aspects of their psyche.
RUMINATE - To think carefully and for a long period about something. Psychologists take this definition to suggest that people keep thinking about negative thoughts, experiences, or feelings and get stuck in a negative loop of these thoughts.
